Things Polish

Members of the Polish parliament are getting friction on a move to name Jesus as the country's king... from the resident hierarchy:
Members of the governing Law and Justice party and League of Polish Families as well as the opposition Peasants party back the resolution, said Szymon Ruman, spokesman for parliamentary speaker Marek Jurek....

[O]n Wednesday several bishops criticized it, and said parliament should stay out of religious affairs.

"Let parliament deal with passing better laws that we need," Gdansk Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski said.

"This kind of action, although it may stem from good will, sounds a bit like propaganda," added Bishop Tadeusz Pieronk.
I always thought Wojtyla was king of Poland, but oh well.

Elsewhere, continuing its recent pattern of quick response to controversial stories, amid reports that newly-named archbishop of Warsaw Stanislaw Wojech Wielgus was an intelligence operative in the Communist regime, the Holy See hit back ferociously in statements released this morning.

In its own communique, the Vatican said that in deciding Wielgus' appointment, it "took into consideration all the circumstances of his life, among which [were] also those regarding his past." Bottom line: "the Holy Father sustains toward" Wielgus "full trust and, with full consciousness, entrusted to him the mission of Shepherd of the Archdiocese of Warsaw."

Less vague was the statement of the presidency of the Polish episcopal conference, which deemed the allegations a "a clear example of 'wild illustration'" and sought to "recall attention to the public injury" of Wielgus' "good reputation."

Expressing that the allegations were "especially offensive in the case of an ecclesiastic," the conference's three top leaders wrote that "the simple verification of a conversation between a priest and a member of the Communist security services cannot in itself attest to an immoral collaboration." The bishops vowed their "solidarity" with the new archbishop, entrusting "his person and the new mission entrusted to him" to God.

The Polish statement was released alongside that of the Vatican in this morning's Bollettino of the Holy See Press Office. (SVILUPPO: Official translations, courtesy VIS.)
